My name is P. Quinby Hunter, and I am a secondary high school teacher. I am finishing up my master's in secondary education, with an emphasis on Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Below you will find information about my final project titled, Developing Teacher Global Competency to Support Emergent Bi/multilingual Secondary Students.
This eportfolio contains all of the supporting documentation from my project, including my research journal, plan of action, literature review, interventions, and data.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of professional development on teacher’s disposition and skills when teaching emergent bi/multilinguals. The full-time teaching staff in a high school in an urban district in the Midwest were the participants in this action research study. During the 2021-2022 school year, teachers attended a series of professional developments focused on integrating student culture and language into the classroom. Data collected included survey data in the form of the Globally Competent Teaching questionnaire administered before and after the series of professional developments. Other data sources included participant reflections during the professional developments, observational data in the form of a reflective journal, and a follow-up survey administered in fall of 2023. Results indicated that following professional development teachers demonstrated an increased awareness of students’ cultures and language usage and value of integrating them into the classroom. Additionally, professional development was an effective way to positively shift teacher dispositions and skills around globally competency. Future research should focus on how teachers can bring students’ culture and language into the classroom and the longer-term implications of professional development on teaching practices.
