Concentration: Drawing

My purpose of pursuing my degree is to better my artistic skills and develop a better artistic eye. I want to gain knowledge in the creation process and improve myself as a creator, while developing a marketable style. I plan to use my degree in a marketing field going forward in life. I would like to use my creativity into the work force. I think being creative will give me an advantage in the workplace where I can be a creative problem solver, and also design and direct concepts that other people will not have thought of.

In my opinion, my strongest works included in my portfolio were the ‘Stay Golden’ collage and the charcoal figure drawing. The collage was created from multiple sources and images on word and then I recreated it through different mediums. I used ink pen, acrylic paint, colored pencil, ink, and graphite pencil. I thought this work turned out very nice and it feels cohesive despite being a mashup of magazine photos, albums, and parts of other random images. The charcoal drawing is one of my favorite drawings because I started to finally get a better visual grasp of shadows. It’s not perfect, but it is one of the more accurate images I have created from life. I really enjoy how the ribs and left breast look realistic and clearly drawn.

I think the weakest pieces in my portfolio were the praying mantis and the breast mug. The praying mantis is one of my earlier works and does not look fully finished in my opinion. There is something left to be desired in the staircase and form-building in general. The mug is a piece I enjoy, but do not feel accurately represents my strengths of an artist. The form is weak; the concept is simple; and the glaze is messy. I think this is one of my weakest pieces because it lacks originality.

One of the most important things I’ve learned in my undergraduate education is perseverance. I have struggled with mental and physical health issues, and as a result, pushing through for this degree has made me more resilient. I will carry this drive with me into the future.
