Statement of Intention

My purpose in pursuing my degree is ultimately to be a teacher. I am currently also working to get my bachelor’s in philosophy. Ultimately, I believe that these two degrees paired together provide the proper foundation for me to build upon when I am ready. I know that I must experience some life before I return to school again, but I am equipped with the proper tools to perceive, reflect, and communicate. The most important thing that I have learned in my time at Mizzou isn’t any measurable skill. My degrees have allowed me to practice my critical thinking skills. It’s not that I can regurgitate some formulas that have been applied, I have been equipped with the ability to investigate and research whatever is of interest. Art and Philosophy are the disciplines most in line with the way that I interact with the world. Through experimentation and understanding, I believe that I have been equipped with the ability to critically analyze any problem that presents itself.

The works that I believe are the strongest are the Parts and Puzzle Alternative, Forgotten Journey, Keeping up with the Joneses, and the Wonders of Optometry. These are largely the culmination projects of a semester worth of research that was deep into collage. These works showcase collage elements and call for the viewer to investigate further through color usage, environment creation, and by playing with expectation.

The works that I feel are the weakest are most of my early work, the foundation examples. Largely, I am disinterested in drawing. I have shaky hands from caffeine and just my energy, so the works reflect my attempts. These pieces were also made early in my time at Mizzou, I have largely grown a tremendous amount over the years. I think the early work represents an early introduction to collage and surrealistic explorations. I just don’t believe that the early work does it as effective as later work.
