Creating treatment plans is likely going to be a part of most social work positions. Whether they are extremely detailed, or basic SMART goals, all clients that we will have are working toward some type of change or goal. Treatment plans allow for the clinician and the client to be held accountable. It keeps treatment on track and ensures that clients are making small steps toward their goals. This is a skill that can be carried throughout a social work career. It can be used to meet clients where they are at.

Skills, competencies &/or capacities learned

  • Evaluate, select, and implement appropriate multidimensional assessment, diagnostic, intervention, and practice evaluation tools. 
  • Communicate professional judgments to other social workers and to professionals from other disciplines, in both verbal and written formats. 
  • Research and apply knowledge of diverse populations to enhance client well-being. 
  • Use knowledge of the effects of oppression, discrimination, and historical trauma on client and client systems to guide treatment planning and intervention.
  • Apply knowledge of personal experiences, biases, and thinking patterns and how this may impact work with clients.
  • Seek and critically appraise current advances in clinical theory, evidence-informed practice, and evidence‐based practice in social work and related helping profession.
