FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (Buckley Amendment) prohibits access to, or release of, educational records or personally identifiable information contained in such records (other than directory information) without the written consent of the student or as specified by other exceptions such as subpoenas and court orders. It also provided control over the release of educational record information. The original intent of this legislation was to keep elementary and high school records private and to give parents access to their child’s school records.

Once a student turns eighteen, or attends school beyond secondary school, the rights of access to the student’s records transfer to the student. This means that all academic information regarding a college student goes directly to the student unless the student has given specific, written permission to release that information to someone else. This means that if a student does not sign a permission to release information form it will limit others’ access to information when speaking with:

  • Academic Advising Staff
  • Registrar Staff
  • Instructors

What is Academic Advising?

Academic advising is a process of information exchange that empowers students to realize their maximum educational potential. The advising process is collaborative and student-centered and will result in the student gaining a clearer understanding of himself/herself and the experience of higher education.

Students should not self-advise. This could result in missing graduation requirements.

Scheduling Appointments: Advisors only schedule appointments via MU Connect unless there is an emergency. They do not schedule via email.

Advisors can help with:

  • Assist with creating an academic plan, including monitoring and discussing academic progress.
  • Explain general education, major, and certification requirements.
  • Interpret institutional procedures and timelines (adding/dropping courses, etc.).
  • Discuss any issues of concern, for example:
  • Encourage students who are experiencing difficulty in courses to seek resources.
  • Refer to campus resources.
  • Give advice on how to talk to instructors concerning academic work.
  • Notify instructors of emergency situations.
  • Recommend opportunities for personal growth and development.

Desired Student Learning Outcomes for the Advising Experience:

  • Students will make active decisions concerning their degree and career goals: help their advisor develop an academic plan that will involve their goals and choose courses each semester towards those goals.
  • Students will utilize the resources on campus and make use of referrals to those resources to assist in achieving their academic, personal and career goals.
  • Students will model different strategies needed to reach their goals:
  • Track GPA and use strategies for improvement for admission processes such as Mid-Level Experiences.
  • Assess if previous course work will transfer to the University of Missouri.
  • Determine if being an education major at the University of Missouri is an attainable goal.
  • Students will prepare for appointments: come with questions, have an open mind about classes/opportunities, and ready to take notes.
  • Students will follow the No Show and Late Policy for advising appointments.
  • Students will use email appropriately to communicate with their advisor: include student ID, use only their Mizzou email address, respond in a timely manner, and use professional language.

Advising Timeline:

  • First semester as an Education student: Make a semester-by-semester plan appointment to develop your academic plan.
  • Meet with an academic advisor at least once every semester during early registration.
  • First semester of Mid-Level Experiences or 4 semesters before graduation: Make a graduation plan appointment to update your academic plan with your advisor following the instructions sent to you by your advisor.

Choosing Classes: Class planning is a collaboration with your advisor. Advisors will help name specific classes that are required for your degree. However, you will have many classes in which you will have a choice in how you fulfill the requirement. Advisors can give feedback, information on the course options, and a few recommendations, but it will be up to you to make the final choice in courses that align with the requirements given to you. If you have questions about if the course you have chosen fulfills the requirement, you must check with your advisor.

Advising Communication: Advisors will initiate communication primarily through email. Please make sure you read your emails thoroughly. Advisors do NOT communicate through Microsoft Teams. When emailing, make sure you do the following: include your name and ID number, only email through your Mizzou email address, and use professional language. Advisors will take anywhere from 1-3 business days to respond to you. Please do not email a second time until the 3rd day. Your advisor might answer your email asking for an appointment instead. This is normal! Please make an appointment via MU connect.

No Show and Late Policy

Students who do not reschedule or cancel their academic advising appointments within one hour of the scheduled start time will be considered a “no show”. Students who “no show” three (3) appointments will have a hold placed on their account until they attend an appointment with their academic advisor. A student who fails to keep their fourth scheduled appointment must meet with the College’s Director of Academic Advising (Dr. Jackie Schneller).

Why is this a policy?

The Academic Advising office serves a large population of undergraduate students. The policy is intended to ensure we maximize our ability to meet with students in a limited number of available advising appointment times.

Students that call or come to the office to cancel or reschedule an appointment at least one hour in advance do not receive any kind of consequence for doing so.

We understand that circumstances can change unexpectedly, which is why our policy allows for three (3) unattended appointments without notice. However, a student who has missed three (3) scheduled academic advising appointments has prevented our office from assisting additional students in that scheduled timeframe.

Late Arrivals

Academic advising appointments are typically scheduled from 30 minutes to an hour. We allow late arrivals up to ten (10) minutes. Students must communicate with their advisor or the office within the 10-minute window or it will be counted as a “no show” and the appointment must be rescheduled. Your academic advisor typically has appointments scheduled back-to-back and is unable to take time from another student’s scheduled appointment.

Education (BSEd and BES) GPA Requirements

To be in good standing, a student must have both a term GPA and cumulative GPA at or above a 2.0.

Certification GPA Requirements: The state of Missouri requires students to have the following:

  • 3.0 Education GPA
  • 3.0 Content GPA (when applicable)
  • 3.0 Program GPA

Being on Academic Warning or Notice will require an Advising Appointment to remove a hold that will be placed on your account on myZou.
