Early Experiences, Mid-Level Experience and Advanced-Level Experiences

The curriculum for the BSEd degrees is delivered through a three-tier framework.

Early Experiences generally refers to the foundational part of the degree program (first year and second year).
Mid-Level Experiences generally refers to the methodology part of the degree program (third year).
Advanced-Level Experiences generally refers to the teaching internship/capstone part of the program (fourth year).

Requirements for Mid-Level Experiences

Mid-Level experiences begin during the FALL semester only. All students are required to submit an application for Mid-Level. You should discuss the Mid-Level Experiences guidelines with an Education Advisor. Prior to starting mid-level experience courses, students should have successfully completed the following items:

ESC_PS 2010 and LTC 2040 – grade C- grade or higher
ESC_PS 2014 and LTC 2044 – grade of S
English 1000 (or equivalent) – grade C- grade or higher
Overall GPA minimum 2.00
LTC 1100 (Orientation) – grade S
Math and Quantitative Reasoning requirement (or equivalent) – grade C- or higher
Documented Standardized Testing Score

If you do not meet all the criteria listed above but believe you should be starting mid-level experiences, please consult with an Education Advisor.

Secondary Social Studies

Secondary Social Studies students who are starting in Mid-Level will be required to complete an interview as part of the Mid-Level Application Process. This interview is to ensure that Secondary Social Studies is the right fit for you! Secondary Social Studies: Secondary Social Studies is a capped program and requires additional documentation which includes:

Cover Letter
Resume
Letter of Reference
Current GPA

Applications will be due in Early-Mid February. For your application to be complete, you will be asked to submit this additional documentation through a second application link which will be sent to all applicants of the program at the end of the month. You will also be required to participate in an interview on shortly after the application due date. More detail and an informational video will be available soon. Should you happen to miss the application deadline, please reach out to your academic advisor to discuss the options. Please note that ALL students will receive an interview, even if you applied late or missed the deadline. Decisions will be made in March, likely close to spring break.

Tips to improve your Application/Interview:

Get a good reference who can speak to your passion for teaching, your leadership, or your responsibility. This will be communicated through your letter of recommendation/character letter. The reference should be a letter not the contact information. Most letters are about three paragraphs long and speak to your professional, passionate, leadership, and other qualities that make you a strong potential teacher.
Highlight things that you have done (volunteer, work, service learning, church, etc.) that demonstrates an interest in teaching, working with youth, or learning. (3) Dress up on the interview day. Research tells us that when you dress to impress, this can prompt a favorable opinion of your performance.
- Note: Some of the interviewers will be teachers from the local district.

Secondary Social Studies Is a Capped Program

Since the Secondary Social Studies program is a capped program, not all students will be placed in Secondary. Students who do not make it into the Secondary Program, will be given the option to, and are encouraged to continue with Middle School Social Studies pathway. Please note, if you don’t get in to “secondary,” we encourage you to go for the “middle school” social studies. The programs are very similar. (We actually have more demand for middle school social studies teachers, and you’ll find it easier to get a job.) In either case, as I explain in the video, you can still take the test to become certified in secondary social studies the summer after you graduate.
