Helping a teen client set a relationship goal when the relationship did not seem healthy was a challenge I faced using mutually agreed-upon goal setting and planning. Despite the fact that I could see how the relationship could create additional barriers for the client, it was challenging for me on a professional level because I had to fight against my own judgment and bias. I had to remember that it is not my place to make decisions for the client and it is my priority to allow them to make their own decisions. Because I followed the NASW code of ethics responsibly to conduct self-determination, my professional values support goal planning for the client. I respect and promote the right of my clients to self-determination and assist them in identifying and clarifying their goals.
