1. Students read excerpts from the racial autobiographies. They annotate and analyze independently and then come back together in small groups. From there, we discuss the main elements as a class and relate it to the creative nonfiction genre during our unit. We discuss identity (the theme of the unit) and relate to our essential questions. Then we analyze the specific techniques used in the writing.

2. Students in Yearbook read this article. Students discuss as a class the topic at hand and why it is important. Students discuss social justice and relate that to our purpose as yearbook creators. Then students discuss our yearbook theme of being "on the map" and how we can find topics like this that highlight the work our school/district is doing to improve our community, make change, and that many might not know about.

3. Students in Newspaper watch this TED Talk. They discuss their initial reactions on a notecard, reflecting on what stood out to them, what they learned, and how that is relevant to our work as newspaper writers and editors. Then they share their notecards with the class and we discuss. Then students take headlines I have created or found and then analyze them thinking about inclusivity and social justice. Then we look at past newspapers and evaluate how we have used headlines in the past. Students then use an exit slip to reflect on how they will use this information going forward. Students then read this article (no headline) to discuss. Then they will practice writing possible headlines to then share.

4. This website on classism has many links that give access to lesson plans that can be very helpful for incorporating classism instruction into the taught curriculum.

5. Students in Creative Writing analyze some of the poetry and writing on this website and discuss the themes of the authors, as well as how that relates to social justice and our unit questions/objectives. Students will make sure to also focus on writing techniques.

6. There are lessons on this website to help include in the curriculum information and content about the LGBT+ community.
