Competency 6 requires social workers to understand strategies to engage diverse clients and constituencies to advance practice effectiveness. I was able to use voter registration to engage with a diverse community and help them make lasting changes within their community. This aligns with the competency. I registered all voters of voting age. Also, I explained how their voices could help me see how their values might affect my line of work. Voting has always been a priority for me. While I always make it a point to register by age 18, many of the clients I deal with do not find voting to be a positive experience. In hearing the statement "Voting won't change anything for me," a lot, I had to ensure that I was not projecting my own personal views onto my clients, but rather providing resources to ensure why they should vote. Furthermore, it is important to make residents aware that voting is a way for them to support laws and policies in the general interest of low income residents and others like them. They are encouraged to join those who share their interests.
